Service tip for the month April
When looking for literature on a specific topic it is recommended to use subject headings.
- Subject headings describe the content of the source but do not appear in its title. They allow you to find media composed in different languages which fit your subject.
- Subject headings are standardized terms which our subject librarians assign to our media. Note the suggestions that appear while typing in the search field "Subject heading"!
- Subject headings are short, concise terms (in the catalogue mainly in German). Just write single subject headings one behind the other in the search field "Subject heading", so they will be automatically linked in the search! (1)
- In databases subject headings can be used as search terms - sometimes subject headings are called subject terms, thesaurus terms etc.
Some media such as very recent documents or the essays in the second tab "Articles& more" often have no subject terms assigned. Use additional title keywords for your search. (2)
- In the catalogue use the search field "Title".
- There is also the search "All fields": The keywords can then appear throughout the bibliographic description, for example in the abstract or in the publishing statement.
- When using the simple search with keywords you search in all fields of bibliographic description.
