After successfully implementing RFID technology in the Departmental Library LEG in Kulmbach, this technology will now also be introduced on a larger scale at the campus in Bayreuth. This will enable library users to borrow their books independently in the future.
For this to work, our collection needs to be adapted to the new standard and technology: just under a year ago, we started adding individualized RFID tags to hundreds of thousands of books and journals in the open stacks of the different libraries so that the devices will be able to recognize the media.
Over the last weeks, the technical requirements for installing the new devices have been met and, in the meantime, the needed components for those devices have also been delivered. Since the end of April, you can spot huge palettes – currently still nicely packaged – containing the self-checkout devices, security gates and other equipment in the departmental libraries NW I, NW II, Geo and the Main Library.
We ask for your kind understanding for any upcoming restrictions as we start installing the devices mid-May.
